 안녕하세요! [겜덕 연구소]를 운영하고 있는 조기자입니다. 이번에도 레트로 게임 전문가이신 검떠 님을 모셨습니다. 이번 시간에는 디자인 끝내주는 뱅앤올룹슨 TV를 게임기로 개조하는 과정을 다뤄 어떻게 활용하는지 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.

 조기자 : 안녕하세요 검떠님, 반갑습니다. 오늘 또 새로운 주제로군요. 뱅앤올룹슨 TV라니.. 많은 분들이 생소하실 것 같은데요. 국내에 정식 발매된 TV는 아닌 거죠? 
 검떠: 그렇습니다. 사실 많은 분들은 뱅앤올룹슨을 스피커 관련, 음향 전문 회사라고 기억하실 것 같은데요, 여기에서도 다양한 CRT TV가 출시가 되었었습니다. 주로 유럽에서 활용되었기 때문에 국내에서는 다소 생소하지만, 굉장히 미려하고 아름다운 TV라는 것은 부인할 수 없습니다. 
 조기자: 게다가 RGB 입력도 탑재되어 있기에 게임용으로도 적합하긴 하겠군요. 다만 이 모니터가 전설로 불리우는 이유는, 지금 구하려면 주로 독일에서 구해야한다는 점 때문입니다. 독일 중고 가전 커뮤니티에서 TV를 공수하여, 대행업체를 통해 세금을 내고 국내에 들어와야하는 것이죠. 
 실제로 저도 25인치 뱅앤올룹슨 CRT TV를 들여온 적이 있는데, 돈 100은 우습게 나가더군요 다만 너무 디자인이 좋아서 구입하지 않을 수 없었습니다.

 검떠: 이야.. 정말 디자인이 끝내주네요.. 모델 명이 뭐죠?
 조기자: 뱅앤올룹슨 MX 3000 / MX 3500 / MX4000 으로 시리즈가 있습니다. 디자인은 동일하고 색상이나 내부 스펙이 조금씩 차이가 있죠. 집에 CRT 하나 놓자고 할 때 너무 이뻐서 마눌님도 허락을 할 것 같은 디자인입니다. 무엇보다 얇고 이쁘니까요. 만약 25인치대로 넘어간다면 MX 7000 등의 모델을 찾으시면 됩니다.
 영상을 보시면 전반적인 디자인 등을 확인하실 수 있을 겁니다. 리모콘 조차도 감각적이지요. 딱 제 스타일입니다

 조기자: 이번 개조기는 다소 안타까운 일로부터 진행됩니다. 독일에서 TV를 땡긴 지인분이 틀었는데 고장품이었던 것입니다. 그래서 수리를 맡길만한 곳을 수소문했는데.. 워낙 이 뱅앤올룹슨 TV가 국내에서 처음 보는 모델이다보니 고치는 게 쉽지 않았다고 하더군요. 
 망연자실하고 있는 지인 분의 어깨를 두드려 위로해준 후, 케이스를 제가 기증받기로 (빼앗기로) 했습니다. 
 그래서 내부 브라운관을 드러내고, LCD와 오락실 기판을 탑재하여 전용 게임기로 만들 계획을 잡게 되었습니다. 우선은 기기를 분해하는 것부터가 시작이었죠.

 조기자: 보시면 아시겠지만, CRT 치고는 극한으로 얇은데다, 피아노 같이 기품있는 광이 흐르는 케이스라는 걸 알 수 있죠. 거기에 사운드도 기가 막히고요.
 이렇게 하나 하나 부품을 떼어내고 분해한 다음에 이제 브라운관 대신 화면을 출력해줄 LCD 모니터를 찾아 헤매게 되었습니다. 
 보통 19인치 4대3 LCD는 흔한데, 조금이라도 더 큰화면을 찾으려다보니 20인치 4대3 LCD를 찾아야했거든요. 오랜 수소문 끝에 인천에 한 덕후님으로부터 20인치 4대3 LCD를 모듈 체로 공수할 수 있었습니다.

 조기자: 이렇게 LCD를 구해서 작동을 확인한 후, 어떻게 고정해야할지 고민하게 되었죠. 보통 CRT 브라운관은 모서리에 동그란 돌기가 있어서 거기에 걸면 되는데, LCD는 그런 고정할 부분이 없으니까요.
 그래서 양옆 기둥에 홈을 파고, LCD 모니터 뒷면의 홀에 긴 막대리를 두고 고정해주기로 했습니다.

 검떠: 이야~ 정말로 아름답게 배치된 모습이군요. 화면에 정확하게 딱 들어가는 모습이네요. 20인치 LCD를 잘 구한 것 같습니다.
 조기자: 그렇죠? 뒤에 판을 대고 고정대를 통해 고정했더니 아주 아름답게 안착한 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 
 그리고 밑에 보시면 알겠지만.. 뱅앤올룹슨의 상징이라고 할 수 있는 스피커도 거의 다 찢어지고 산화되어.. 사용할 수 없을 지경이 되어 있더군요. 어쩔 수 없이 눈물의 교체를 ...

 조기자: 이렇게 LCD를 고정하고 스피커를 맞춘 후에는 케이스 도면 작업에 들어가게 됩니다. 크게 어렵지 않은 작업으로, 기판을 드러내고 뻥 뚫린 뒷 부분에 아크릴로 재단을 해서 마감을 하는 방식이지요. 
 일단 아크릴로 사이즈를 재서 주면 바로 재단해주는 곳이 있기 때문에, 슥슥 종이에 그려서 아크릴 전문점에 보내봅니다.

 검떠: 이야~ 뒷 면에 굉장히 잘 맞는데요? 적당히 종이로 그려서 저렇게 맞춤형 재단이 되어 나오다니 편리하네요.
 조기자: 그렇죠? 이렇게 뒷면을 깔끔하게 마감해야 기분이 좋죠. 안그래도 엄청 디자인이 좋은 기기니까요. 최대한 느낌을 맞추려고 검은색 아크릴을 골랐는데, 정말 잘 고른 것 같습니다.
 이렇게 뒷면까지 재단을 한 뒤에는 본격적으로 내부를 만들어야겠지요. 내부에 어떤 것을 넣을까 고민을 하다가.. 게임 기판을 넣는 게 가장 안정적이겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 
 버블 보블 같은 기판을 넣으면 실로폰 소리에 아주 좋을 것도 같고, 또 까만색이니까 네오지오 전용 콘솔 게임기 처럼 활용해도 좋겠다 싶었죠. 
 그래서 오락실 게임 기판의 규격인 잠마 규격으로 배치하기 시작했습니다.

 검떠: 이야~ 이렇게 화면을 보면 이제 거의 끝난 거 아닌가요?
 조기자: 그렇죠. 생각보다 스무스하게 진행되었습니다. 다만 이렇게까지 오는데에도 며칠의 시간이 걸렸다는 거~~ 사진으로는 한순간에 보면서 내리지만, 결코 쉬운 작업은 아닙니다
 실험적으로 기판을 연결해서 테스트했는데 잘 나오는 상황이니, 이제 본격적인 마감을 해야할 시기입니다. 특히 MVS를 어떻게 고정할까 하다가 바닥에 고정하기로 했네요.

 조기자: 이렇게 작동 확인을 한 후에, 뒤늦게 볼륨 노브가 준비되어 있지 않다는 점을 깨닫고 볼륨 노브를 구입하러 다녀옵니다 
 원래 MVS 내부에 앰프가 달려있기 때문에 별도의 앰프를 준비할 필요는 없고, 저항 값에 맞춰서 조정해주는 노브를 달아놓은 것이지요.

 조기자: 이렇게 본체에 대한 만반의 준비가 다 된 가운데, 다음 고민은 조이스틱으로 이어졌습니다. 
 어떤 스틱을 해야 이 뱅앤올룹슨 TV에 어울리는 격을 갖춘 모습을 연출할 수 있을까.. 라는 것이었죠. 피아노 재질처럼 광도 나고 한없이 고급스러운 자태를 뽐내려면 어떤 조이스틱을 준비해야 할 것인가~~
 고민하다가, 떠오른 것이 바로 재믹스 미니 스틱입니다. 이전에 재믹스 미니 스틱을 추가로 판매하기도 했었거든요. 저도 2개 여분으로 가지고 있었는데, 그 스틱을 개조해서 활용하기로 결정했습니다.

 조기자: 다만, 이 재믹스 미니 조이스틱은 PC 용 기반의 PCB로 구성되어 있어서, 기판에 맞게 연결할 수 없었습니다. 특히 2개의 키를 동시에 눌러서 여러가지 효과를 볼 수 있도록 했으므로, 아케이드 15핀으로 쓰기에는 쉽지 않았죠. 그래서 결국 전용 스틱 PCB를 새로 뜨기로 했습니다. 
 검떠: 헐.. PCB를 새로 뜨셨다고요? 왜 그런 짓을 너무 낭비 아닙니까?
 조기자: 아닙니다 검떠님~~ 전혀~~ 낭비가 아닙니다. 하고 싶은 일을 하면서 사는 게 무엇보다 중요한 게 아니겠습니까? 바로 그런 일을 하는 겁니다. 저는 이 재믹스 미니 스틱으로 오락실 게임을 즐기고 싶었다구욧

 조기자: 이렇게 해서.. 또 일주일의 시간이 흘렀고.. 드디어 최종적으로 작업이 완료되었습니다. 
 TV도 마감을 완벽하게 했고, 조이스틱도 빠닥빠닥하게 2세트가 준비되었죠. 
 맨 위에 코인과 스타트 버튼이 있고, 아래에 4개 버튼이 있는 구조라 아주 적절해보였습니다. 뱅앤올룹슨 이상으로 빤질거려서 이질감없이 잘 어울려서 좋기도 했고요. 
 다만 원래의 재믹스 조이스틱이 그랬듯이 너무 작고 귀엽게 아담하다보니 조작 안정성 면에서는 좋은 점수를 주긴 어렵기도 합니다.

 조기자: 이렇게 하여~~ 근 2-3주의 터울을 지나 완성된 뱅앤올룹슨 게임기 에디션입니다. 재믹스 조이스틱을 사용하기 때문에, '뱅앤재믹슨'이라고 장난삼아 붙이기도 했는데요, 일단 이렇게 무사히 또 하나의 프로젝트를 완성했다는 점에서 스스로에게 대견하다고 생각하고 있습니다. 
 이번 프로젝트는 뱅앤올룹슨이라는 걸출한 디자인의 TV가 있었기에 꼭 하나 가지고 싶어서 준비를 했고요, 오는 5월 24일과 25일에 일산 킨텍스에서 열리는 플레이엑스포의 대표적인 행사 '레트로 장터'에서 시연이 될 예정이니 많은 관심 부탁드리겠습니다. 검떠님도 오늘 수고하셨습니다~
