 (서울=뉴스1) 이기범 기자 = 얇다, 그런데 우뚝 솟았다. '아이폰 에어'의 첫인상이다.
 '에어'는 기존 스마트폰의 '카메라 섬'과는 달랐다. 카메라 하나를 얹기엔 지나치게 크고 웅장한 '고원'이 펼쳐졌다. 여기엔 이유가 있었다. 애플이 '플래토'(plateau)라고 부르는 이 자리에는 카메라와 스피커, 프로세서까지 모두 한데 모여 있다. 얇은 디자인과 최신 성능을 뒷받침하는 배터리, 두 마리 토끼를 잡기 위한 디자인 접근법이다.

 스마트폰을 단순히 얇게 디자인하는 일은 어렵지 않다. 문제는 줄어든 공간을 어떻게 채우느냐다. 특히 얇게 줄어든 공간만큼 배터리가 차지할 공간도 줄게 된다. 갈수록 높아지는 스마트폰 성능을 뒷받침하는 건 고용량의 배터리다. 
 마치 치약을 짜듯이 스마트폰 내부 주요 부품을 짜내 상단으로 응집한 이 구조는 나머지 공간을 배터리로 채우기 위한 디자인이다. 얇지만 성능도 배터리도 놓지 않겠다는 의지가 '플래토'에 담겼다.

 문제는 이 과정에서 어쩔 수 없는 더하기 빼기가 이뤄진다는 점이다. 5.6㎜로 극한으로 얇아진 아이폰 위에 할애된 공간은 많지 않다. 듀얼 카메라가 '기본'이 된 시대에 후면 카메라 하나만 덩그러니 얹혔다.
 '아이폰17' 시리즈와 마찬가지로 4800만 화소 퓨전 메인 카메라가 탑재됐지만, 넓게 찍는 광각이나 줌을 당겨 찍는 망원 영역에서 아쉬움을 채워줄 수는 없다. 아이폰 에어는 접사(매크로) 촬영도 지원하지 않는다.

 물리적인 '유심'도 빠졌다. 그렇게 확보한 배터리도 조금은 아쉽다. 애플이 제시한 배터리 사용 시간은 동영상 재생 시간을 기준으로 아이폰 에어는 최대 27시간, '아이폰17' 30시간, '아이폰17 프로' 31시간, '아이폰 17 프로 맥스' 37시간 수준이다. 물론 '아이폰16 프로'에 필적하는 수준이지만, 기본 모델인 아이폰17보다 30만 원 비싼 159만 원부터 시작한다는 점을 고려했을 때 아쉽다.

 실제 아이폰 에어는 e심을 적용하지 않은 상태에서 유튜브 영상, 음악, 페이스타임, SNS 및 웹서핑 정도 기능을 쓰는 수준에서도 하루 사이 배터리는 20% 이하로 떨어졌다. 
 '프로'급의 두뇌는 성능보다 전력 소모를 줄이는 데 초점이 맞춰진 모습이다. 2개의 고성능 코어와 4개의 효율 코어를 갖춘 'A19 프로'는 3149mAh 수준의 배터리에서 최대의 전력 효율을 뽑아낸다. 그러나 실제 벤치마크 테스트 결과들을 보면 아이폰 에어는 성능 면에서도 이번 아이폰17 제품군 중 최약체로 나타났다.

 애플이 14만 9000원짜리 아이폰 에어 전용 '맥세이프 배터리' 액세서리를 내놓은 점도 배터리 한계를 방증한다.
 애플의 빼기는 여기에서 그치지 않았다. 출시 직후 이용자들의 가장 많은 지탄을 받은 부분은 '모노 스피커'다. 음량도, 사운드의 풍성함도 몇 세대 이전의 아이폰보다도 뒷걸음친다.
 가격 측면에서 설득력도 약하다. 단순히 얇다는 것 외에 일반 사용자에게는 와닿기 힘들다. '에어'는 '미니'와 '플러스'와 달리 프로와 기본형 사이에서 '어중간'을 넘어 생존할 수 있을까.
