 안녕하세요! [겜덕 연구소]를 운영하고 있는 조기자입니다. 이번에도 레트로 게임 전문가이신 검떠 님을 모셨습니다. 이번 시간에는 내 게임기에서 다른 게임기의 게임을 즐길 수 있도록 해주는 도킹 시스템에 대해 살펴보는 시간을 가지도록 하겠습니다.

 조기자 : 안녕하세요 검떠님, 반갑습니다. 오늘은 새로운 주제로군요! 바로 게임기 도킹 스테이션!! 입니다. 일종의 합체 같은 거죠!
 검떠: 그렇습니다. 도킹 시스템! 사실 어린 시절부터 청소년들은 전자기기들의 합체에 환장하는 모습을 보였었죠. 건담이라든가, 메칸더 브이 등등 우리의 어린 시절은 이런 로봇들의 합체 기믹과 늘 함께 했다고 해도 과언이 아니고, 뭔가가 더해져서 더 큰 시너지 효과를 낸다는 부분에서 다양한 도킹 시스템들이 각광받았던 것으로 기억합니다. 
 조기자: 일반 장난감도 합체시키면 재밌는데, 게임기는 얼마나 재미가 있었겠습니까. 아예 새로운 게임기가 탄생해서 새로운 게임을 즐길 수 있다는데! 도킹 시스템은 예전에도 지금도 뭇 청소년들을 흥분시키는 요소가 충분하다고 생각합니다.
 검떠: 그렇죠. 새로운 입력기기를 도입한다거나 혹은 하위호환을 위한다거나 업그레이드를 위하는 등 다양한 형태의 도킹 머신들이 등장했으니까요, 오늘 한 번 살펴보시죠.

 검떠: 자아 그러면 게임기 별 도킹 시스템에 대해 살펴볼까요? 다양한 게임기들이 있지만, 일단 개인적으로 가장 먼저 생각나는 녀석은 바로 '슈퍼 게임보이'가 아닐까 생각합니다. 
 무려 닌텐도의 슈퍼 패미콤에서 휴대용 게임기인 '게임보이' 게임을 즐길 수 있도록 해주던 바로 그 시스템이죠. 일종의 하위호환 시스템이라고 할 수 있는데요, 이 광고 이미지를 보면 아하 이런 게 있었구나! 라는 생각이 들 겁니다.

 검떠: 보시면 아시겠지만, 슈퍼 게임보이는 슈퍼패미콤 팩 규격을 하고 있습니다. 슈퍼패미콤 처럼 팩을 꽂는 형태인데, 윗부분에 다시 게임보이 팩을 꽂는 형태로 되어 있죠. 
 이렇게 해서 게임보이 팩을 위에 꽂으면 커다란 TV 화면을 통해 게임보이 게임을 즐길 수 있게 되는 것이죠. 그야말로 참신한 도킹 시스템 아닙니까?
 조기자: 어린 시절에 정말 신박하다 했었죠. 저도 기념삼아 가지고 있는 기기이기도 한데요, 휴대용으로 가지고 다니던 게임보이 게임을 즐길 수 있다는 점에서 장점이 있었지만.. 어릴 때는 크게 쓸모가 있었던 건 아니었습니다. 
 보통 어릴때 휴대용 게임기는 부모님 몰래 즐기기에 좋았던 게임기였거든요. 당당하게 집에서 거치형 콘솔 게임기로 게임을 즐기는 건 너무나도 어려운 일이었기에.. 빛 좋은 개살구 같은 느낌이었죠.

 검떠: 게임을 틀면 이렇게 화면 UI가 잡힙니다. 그리고 게임보이 화면 안에 또 다시 게임보이 화면이 있는 거죠. 
 이렇게 되면 슈퍼패미콤의 패드와 넓은 TV 화면으로 휴대용 게임기인 게임보이의 게임들을 즐길 수 있게 됩니다. 특별한 장점이라면 게임보이용 격투 게임들을 2인용으로 즐길 수 있다는 점이 있습니다. 
 퀄리티가 좋긴 못했지만, 접대용으로 친구들이 왔을때 얼추 격투 게임의 맛을 느낄 수 있었으니까요. 
 조기자: 국내에도 이 슈퍼 게임보이가 현대를 통해 출시되긴 했습니다만, 워낙 안팔린 제품이다보니 구하기가 쉽지 않죠. 반면에 일본판은 흔하게 구할 수 있으니 관심있으신 분들은 중고나라나 혹은 일본 옥션을 참조하시면 될 것 같습니다.

 검떠: 두 번째 소개할 제품은 '게임보이 플레이어' 입니다. 슈퍼패미콤으로부터 2세대 뒤의 게임기, 닌텐도 게임 큐브. 역대급으로 이쁜 게임기인데요, 이 게임 큐브도 도킹 시스템이 존재했죠. 바로 게임보이 플레이어!!
 과거 슈퍼패미콤이 '게임보이'를 즐길 수 있었다면, 게임큐브에 존재한 게임보이 플레이어는 한 단계 업그레이드된 '게임보이 어드밴스' 게임을 즐길 수 있었습니다. 
 그러면 TV의 넓은 화면으로 게임보이 어드밴스 게임을 돌릴 수가 있었던 거죠. 정말 획기적이지 않습니까? 게다가 전용 어댑터를 활용하면 게임보이 어드밴스를 게임큐브의 게임패드로 활용할 수도 있었죠.

 조기자: 이 게임보이 플레이어는 특별한 버전이 출시되기도 했는데요, 바로 파나소닉에서 별도로 출시된 파나큐브 입니다. 
 파나큐브는 그 자체로 보석처럼 빛나며 매력적인 게임큐브 최고의 작품 중 하나라고 생각하는데요, 여기에 맞는 파나큐브 게임보이 플레이어가 또 아주 귀합니다.

 조기자: 저번에 일본에 갔을 때 트레이더에 가보니 저 파나큐브 게임보이 플레이어 박스셋만 돈 백만 원 하더라고요. 정말 쉽지 않은 금액이죠. 그러다보니 깔맞춤을 위한 콜렉터들에게 더욱 애증의 제품이 아닐까 생각합니다.

 검떠: 당연한 얘기입니다만, 패미콤도 도킹 시스템이 있었습니다. 우선 위에 소개한 도킹은 네트워크 시스템입니다. 패미콤에 팩처럼 꽂은 뒤에, 경마 같은 것들을 할 수 있었죠. 패미콤 출시가 80년대인 것을 감안하면 당시 일본이 얼마나 전자기기 인프라가 발달했는지 알 수 있는 수준입니다. 
 조기자: 패미콤 아래에 3.5인치 디스크 드라이브로 연결하는 도킹 스테이션도 잊으면 안되죠.

 검떠: 옛날에 일본에서는 패미콤 게임을 자판기를 통해 3.5인치로 구워서 판매하곤 했습니다. 저희 어린 시절과는 많이 비교되죠? 저희는 어디서 짭팩 가져다가 플레이하기 바빴는데.. 일본에서는 일찌감치 다양한 선진기술이 도입되고 있었던 거죠.
 일본이 지금은 많이 뒤쳐진 모습이지만 레트로 게임 분야로 한정한다면 80~90년대의 막강함은 인정할 수 밖에 없는 것 같습니다.

 검떠: 보통 세가를 조롱할때 매번 나오는 기기가 바로 이 32X 죠. 
 메가드라이브가 엄청나게 성공한 이후, 세가새턴으로 넘어가기전에 메가드라이브의 수명을 늘리기 위해 준비한 야심작 32X!!!
 확대 축소, 성능, 발색수 등 모든 면에서 슈퍼패미콤을 능가했던 고성능 기기이지만 등장이 너무 늦었습니다. 게다가 어댑터를 하나 더 꽂아야 한다는 점, 디자인도 구리다는 점, 나아가 게임도 마땅한 게 없어 활용성도 떨어진다는 점에서 세가 실패의 대표적인 하드웨어로 분류되고 있기도 합니다. 
 조기자: 잘 안팔려서 그런가.. 지금 엄청 비싸졌죠. 슬슬 물품이 보이지 않는 즈음이네요. 
 그리고 세가의 도킹 시스템에 대한 사랑은 32X로 끝나지 않습니다. 메가CD로 넘어오면서 세가의 도킹 시스템에 대한 사랑은 제대로 극대화되기 시작하죠.

 검떠: 맞습니다. 메가CD, 메가드라이브, 32X까지 어댑터를 3개를 꽂아야하는 멋진 도킹 스테이션!! 안그래도 거추장스러워 죽겠는데 이정도의 번거로움이라니!! 제법입니다 세가!! 
 조기자: 험험.. 그래도 이러한 메가드라이브는 향후 CDX라는 게임기로 간소화되기도 했습니다. 일본 제품 이름은 멀티메가. 였었죠.

 검떠: 이러한 멀티 메가.. 조기자님도 여러대 가지고 계신 것으로 아는데, 이렇게 컴팩트하게 만들 수 있었으면 애초부터 그렇게 만들었어야 하는 거 아닙니까? 지금 그냥 봐도 너무 매력적인 기기잖아요. 휴대용 CD롬 같은 크기에 메가드라이브 게임도 되고 메가CD 게임도 되는 멋진 기기죠. 끝판왕이라고 할 수 있겠네요.
 조기자: 개인적으로는 그정도 기술력이면 CDX에 32X도 탑재한 게임기가 나왔어도 되는 거 아닌가.. 하는 기대도 있었습니다. 
 32X가 꽤 크다보니 CDX에 얹으면 좀 부담스럽거든요. 무게중심이 있어서 뒤로 넘어갈랑 말랑하는 상태가 됩니다.

 검떠: 여담이지만, 이러한 32X 외에도 세가는 예전 작품인 '세가 마크'의 게임을 메가드라이브에서 돌릴 수 있는 하위호환 기기, 메가 어댑터도 출시한 적이 있습니다.
 메가드라이브를 중심으로, 메가 어댑터를 끼면 하위 호환으로 세가 마크 3 게임을 즐길 수 있는 거고, 32X를 끼면 상위 호환으로 32X 전용 게임을 즐길 수 있는 구조였죠. 
 메가CD에 이런 도킹 장비들을 줄줄이 연결하면 매우 재미난 연출을 할 수 있습니다.

 검떠: 세가 하드웨어가 너무 길어져서 짧게 줄이면, 세가 새턴은 아예 위쪽에 도킹을 위한 팩 슬롯이 존재해 있었죠. 이 팩 슬롯을 통해서 다양한 확장이 가능했는데요, 메모리 확장이라든가, 혹은 네트워크 장비 세팅이 가능했습니다. 사진처럼 확장하여 더욱 고품질의 게임을 즐길 수 있었던 거죠. 
 조기자: 저는 세가새턴 도킹하면 네비새턴을 얘기하지 않을 수 없을 것 같습니다. 
 세가에서 네비용으로 제작한 새턴이 있거든요. 네비 새턴. 여기에 LCD를 도킹하여 사용이 가능했습니다.

 검떠: PC엔진은 딱 봐도 일본 취향의 미니멀을 추구한 기기죠. 크기가 작은 주제에 성능이 꽤 좋아서, 전세계적으로 PC엔진을 사랑하는 팬들도 꽤 많습니다. 
 처음에는 휴카드(게임팩)를 꽂는 흰색 본체만 나왔지만, 점점 개량되더니 CD롬까지 등장하면서 본격적인 합체 머신이 되었습니다. 
 그리고.. 이런 롬롬이 세트 이후에도 슈퍼 씨디롬2 등 다양한 도킹 머신이 등장하기 시작했죠.

 조기자: 이후 PC엔진에도 다양한 버전업이 등장했지요. 
 PC엔진의 장점 중 하나가 다양한 아케이드 게임이 꽤 이식률 높게 이식된다는 점이었는데, 그런 이식률을 높이고 싶었던 것인지 더욱 강력한 프로세스를 가진 머신이 출시되었습니다. 바로 슈퍼 그래픽스!
 높은 성능을 가졌지만.. 디자인이 무슨 에일리언 새끼 같은 느낌이라 외면을 받았고.. 게임도 단 6종류 뿐.
 그래도 PC엔진 유저들에겐 애정이 갈 수 밖에 없는 기기죠. 물론 이 기기도 도킹이 됩니다.

 검떠: 이러한 슈퍼 그래픽스 외에 NEC에서는 휴대용 PC엔진에 대한 많은 고찰이 있었습니다. 
 대표적인 기기가 바로 PC엔진 LT 시리즈죠. PC엔진 휴대용의 궁극기라고 할 수 있는 제품으로, 일본 버블 시대의 산물이라고 할 수 있겠습니다. 당시로는 어마어마하게 큰 액정에 선명한 화면이 놀라웠죠. 옛날부터 100만원이 넘는 기기로.. 일반인이 가지긴 쉽지 않았던 기기이기도 합니다.

 조기자: 이외에도 NEC는 요상한 도킹 시스템을 많이 만들었는데요, 대표적인 게 앰프 30이죠. 
 PC엔진 아래에 거대한 앰프와 스피커를 연결하는, 본격 엔터테인먼트 시스템 구축의 열망이었다고나 할까요.
 이렇게 해서 롬롬이 세트 + PC엔진 LT +앰프 30까지 얹어야 비로소 내가 PC엔진 시리즈 좀 만진다! 라고 할 수 있는 것이지요.

 검떠: 보시면 아시겠지만, 레이저 액티브는 좌측에 별도의 도킹 홀이 존재합니다. 이 도킹 홀에 PC엔진팩이나 메가드라이브팩 중 하나를 선택할 수 있죠. 그래서 당시에도 풀 세트를 마련하는 건 쉬운 일이 아니었습니다.

 조기자: 메가드라이브팩을 얹으면 메가드라이브 게임 외에도 메가CD 게임도 가능했죠. 당연히 32X도 가능하지 않을까? 라고 생각했습니다만 내부 배선 문제도 있고 그정도의 미친 덕후분은 안계시더라고요. 
 PC엔진 팩을 꽂으면 휴카드 게임을 즐길 수 있었는데요, 저 레이저 액티브 전용 패드도 지금은 구하기가 하늘에 별따기더군요. 
 게다가 레이저액티브가 지금 시점에는 대부분 고장.. 그래서 정상품 구하기가 쉽지 않은 상황입니다. 잘 세팅된 레이저 액티브 하나면 바랄 게 없겠다는 덕후분들이 많이 계시죠 :)

 검떠: 자아 오늘의 마지막 도킹 시스템은 바로 패밀리 카드 입니다. 무려 MSX 기판 게임기에 꽂아서 패미콤 게임을 하게 해주는.. 놀랄 성능?을 가진 짝퉁 게임기죠. 제미나에서 개발한 특이한 불법 도킹 시스템이라고 할 수 있겠습니다.

 조기자 : 오 패밀리 카드!! 맞네요 도킹 시스템에 꼭 등장해야하는 기기네요.
 검떠 : 아시는 분들은 아시죠. 패밀리카드가 무엇인지요. 바로 재믹스나 아이큐2000 등의 MSX에서 패미콤 게임을 즐길 수 있게 해주었던 카드 입니다. 야생의 시절이었던 그 시절에도 눈에 띄는 변종이었다고 할 수 있겠네요.
 조기자 : 그 당시에 재믹스를 가진 아이들이 패미콤을 얼마나 가지고 싶었을까, 그 열망을 제미나가 해결해주었구나.. 라는 생각이 듭니다.
