 마피아의 뒷 세계를 다루는 묵직한 스토리와 세력간의 총싸움과 레이싱 대결이 비슷하게 중요한 게임. 마피아 시리즈의 신작 '마피아: 올드 컨트리'가 지난 8일 정식 출시됐다.
 2020년 출시됐던 '마피아3' 이후 약 5년 만에 출시된 이번 작품은 미국 마피아 세력의 시작이자 본거지로 불렸던 이탈리아의 시칠리아를 배경으로, 다양한 패밀리(조직) 간의 갈등을 다루고 있는 것이 특징이다.

 이 게임의 특징은 마피아 세력 간의 암투와 비극적인 이야기를 중심적으로 다뤘던 이전의 시리즈와 달리 주인공 엔조와 보스의 딸인 이사벨라 간의 금지된 사랑을 중심으로 스토리가 진행되어 마치 고전 로맨스 소설을 읽는 듯한 느낌을 준다는 것이다.

 '마피아: 올드 컨트리'의 진행은 오픈월드 장르보다 이야기의 서사를 따라가는 네러티브를 중심으로 한 선행 구조로 이뤄져 있다. 이전 작품들도 오픈월드라고 부르기 어려울 정도로 자유도가 낮았지만, 그래도 서브 퀘스트는 즐길 수 있었던 것과 달리 이 게임은 서사를 중심으로 구성되어 있어 이용자의 자유도를 최소한으로 부여한 모습이다.
 개발사가 이렇게 게임을 설계한 이유는 스토리의 흡입력이 무엇보다 중요했기 때문으로 풀이된다. '마피아: 올드 컨트리'는 아버지에게 단돈 100리라에 광산으로 팔린 가난한 청년 엔조와 토리시 패밀리 보스의 금지옥엽 외동딸 이사벨라와의 사랑 이야기가 그야말로 절절하게 그려진다.

 처음에는 신분 상승을 위해 온갖 궂은일을 맡아 하던 엔조가 이사벨라와의 만남으로 변해가고 결국 두 남녀의 사랑이 싹트는 과정이 매우 설득력 있게 펼쳐지며, 결국 조직의 핵심까지 올라서는 이야기. 
 그리고 패밀리의 핵심으로 올라선 엔조가 이사벨라와의 금지된 사랑을 위해 모든 것을 포기하며, 비극으로 치닫는 후반부는 그야말로 게임을 중단하기 어려울 정도로 깊은 몰입감을 선사한다.

 이처럼 스토리 전개 방식과 연출 그리고 엔딩까지 모든 요소가 상당히 뛰어나게 구현되어 있으나, 여주인공인 이사벨라의 외모는 약간의 ‘옥에 티’로 작용한다. 
 외모의 아름다움 여부를 떠나서 주인공 엔조에 비해 이사벨라가 훨씬 나이가 들어 보여 드문드문 몰입을 방해하는 것은 사실이며, “조금 더 엔조의 나이대와 비슷한 배우를 캐스팅했으면 어땠을까?”라는 아쉬움이 남는다는 것이 본 필자의 생각이다.(일러스트와 인 게임 모델링이 많이 틀리다.)
 이처럼 스토리의 몰입력이 뛰어난 '마피아: 올드 컨트리'이지만, 그렇다고 액션이 지루한 것은 아니다.

 액션 시스템의 경우 이전 작품의 틀을 유지한 채 총보다 스틸레토 나이프로 자웅을 가리는 ‘칼싸움’이 새롭게 추가된 것이 눈에 띈다.

 이 ‘칼싸움’은 베기, 찌르기 등의 공격 패턴은 단 두 가지뿐이지만, 상대의 공격을 받아치는 반격과 공격을 피하는 회피가 곁들여지며, 생각보다 박진감 넘치는 전투를 즐길 수 있는 모습이다. 
 더욱이 대부분의 보스전이 이 ‘칼싸움’으로 마무리되기 때문에 상대의 공격을 피하고, 반격하며, 찌르고, 베는 심리전이 상당히 부각되고, 일정 수준 이상 HP가 감소할 때 이벤트가 발생해 게임의 분위기를 자연스럽게 이어주는 느낌이었다.

 마피아 시리즈의 특징인 레이싱 역시 이 게임에서 그대로 등장한다. 사실 마피아 시리즈는 액션 게임임에도 여느 레이싱게임 못지않게 차량 운전 비중이 꽤 높았는데, 이번 작품에서는 운전 비중은 줄었지만, 레이싱 대회나 차량 추격전 등이 여전히 등장해 게임의 재미를 더한다.

 특히, 말과 자동차가 같은 길을 달리던 1900년대의 시대상을 반영해 말 경주 역시 메인 미션으로 등장하는데, 이 말을 타며 바람을 가르고, 시칠리아의 아름다운 풍경을 보는 맛이 생각보다 뛰어나 차량이 있음에도 말을 타고 달릴 정도였다.
 이와 함께 이탈리아 전통 마을을 보는 듯한 좁은 골목, 소란스러운 시장, 그리고 달빛에 물든 포도밭이 펼쳐지는 시칠리아의 아름다운 풍경과 시칠리아 사투리가 묻어나오는 배우들의 연기까지도 세밀하게 구현되어 허투루 게임을 만든 것이 아니라는 느낌이 절로 들었다.

 물론, 단점도 존재한다. 먼저 스토리 중심으로 흘러가는 게임이다 보니 굉장히 플레이가 제한되어 있어 자유로운 플레이를 원하는 이용자들에게는 매우 답답하게 진행된다.
 ‘익스플로어 모드’를 도입해, 메인 스토리와 별개로 시칠리아를 탐험할 수 있는 여지를 주기는 하지만, 서브 퀘스트가 사실상 없다시피 한 작품이다 보니 굳이 이 모드를 플레이해야 하는 당위성이 떨어진다.

 특히, 스토리가 중점이다 보니 게임의 플레이 타임이 짧아 9시간 정도면 엔딩을 볼 수 있는 등 게임의 볼륨이 적다는 것도 다소 아쉬운 부분이다. 
 여기에 은신 플레이를 강제하여 다소 답답하게 흘러가는 전투와 적을 한 명이라도 놓칠 경우 다음 지역에 적이 등장하지 않아 숨어 있는 적을 찾아다녀야 하는 불편함이 발생하는 것은 추후 패치로 수정해야 할 부분으로 보인다.

 이처럼 몇 가지 단점이 존재하기는 하지만 '마피아: 올드 컨트리'는 마피아가 시작된 시칠리아를 배경으로 비극적인 사랑 이야기를 체험하는 스토리의 재미와 레이싱, 말 경주 및 다양한 액션을 즐길 수 있는 작품이었다. 
 만약 네러티브 형태의 게임에 익숙하거나, 게임을 통해 스토리의 재미를 찾는 이용자. 혹은 사랑하는 연인과 함께 게임을 즐기고자 하는 이들에게 '마피아: 올드 컨트리'는 나쁘지 않은 선택이 될 것으로 보인다.
