 넥슨 '메이플스토리'는 던전앤파이터, 로스트아크와 함께 국내 3대 RPG 중 하나다. 20년 이상 서비스를 이어오면서 한국 게이머라면 누구나 한 번쯤은 즐겼을, PC방에서 다른 게이머의 플레이를 구경했을 정도로 높은 인지도를 쌓아왔다.
 이에 게이머로서 문득 "외국인들도 메이플스토리를 좋아할까"라는 궁금증이 생겼다. 물론 글로벌 메이플스토리가 있지만 한국에 거주하는 수많은 외국인의 국내 서버 플레이는 다른 영역이니까. 기회가 된다면 알아보고 싶었다.
 4월 17일 그 궁금증을 해소할 기회가 찾아왔다. 메이플스토리 서비스 22주년 기념 '핑크빈의 전국 캠퍼스 투어' 이벤트였다. 핑크빈의 전국 캠퍼스 투어는 오는 5월 15일까지 정해진 일정에 따라 서울, 부산, 광주, 대전, 강원 등 전국 각지의 대학 캠퍼스와 번화가에서 전국 메이플 대학생에게 응원 선물을 제공하고 다채로운 참여 이벤트를 선보인다.
 이벤트 진행 시간은 오전 11시부터 오후 5시다. 4월 17일 세종대학교를 시작으로 4월 21일 동국대학교, 4월 23일 서울대학교, 4월 25일 포항공과대학교, 4월 29일 연세대학교 국제캠퍼스, 4월 30일 성균관대학교 인문사회과학캠퍼스, 5월 1일 카이스트, 5월 3일 광안리 밀락더마켓, 5월 7일 아주대학교, 5월 8일 조선대학교, 5월 13일 강원대학교, 5월 15일 영등포 타임스퀘어로 이어진다.
 현장에서는 학생증 제작 방문객을 대상으로 메이플스토리 IP를 활용한 식음료 및 메이플 대학생 훈장 아이템 쿠폰을 제공하는 핑크빈 커피트럭이 운영된다. 또한 트램펄린으로 직접 캐릭터를 조작해 메이플스토리 인기 콘텐츠 '인내의 숲'을 오르는 미니 게임을 마련하고 기록에 따라 다양한 선물을 제공한다.
 각 현장에서 레벨, 캐릭터 생성일 부문별로 가장 높은 기록을 보유한 이용자를 선발해 10만 넥슨캐시를 제공하는 메이플 과수석 이벤트를 진행한다. 더불어 넥슨플레이 앱의 AR 기능을 활용해 이벤트 장소 곳곳에 숨겨진 핑크빈을 찾은 방문객에게는 선착순으로 핑크빈 볼펜과 최대 1000 플레이포인트를 획득할 수 있는 핑크빈 플레이 박스를 선물한다.
 자신의 SNS에 정해진 해시태그와 함께 현장 사진을 게시한 방문객에게는 메이플스토리 무설탕 자일리톨 캔디를 제공하고 이벤트 종료 후 게시글 게재 이력이 있는 50명을 추첨해 5만 넥슨캐시를 추가 지급한다.
 기자는 오전 10시 50분경 세종대학교를 찾았다. 오픈 전인데도 이미 수많은 방문객이 대기열을 형성했다. 대부분 세종대학교 학생들이었다. 메이플스토리를 즐기는 학생들은 대기하면서 게임 관련 이야기를 나눴다. 메이플스토리에 관심이 없었던 사람들도 긴 대기열과 귀여운 부스 일러스트를 보고 줄을 서기도 했다.
 이 때 외국인 학생들이 눈길을 사로잡았다. 예상보다 많이 포착되어 놀랐다. 실제 메이플스토리를 즐기는 유저인지 궁금해 말을 걸었다. 미국에서 온 학생은 "지난해 여름부터 친구와 함께 즐기고 있다. 상위 보스를 공략하는 하드코어 유저는 아니고 시간날 때마다 친구들과 가볍게 즐기고 사냥하면서 채팅도 치는 수준이다"고 답했다.
 중국 여성 유학생은 지난 겨울 챌린저스 월드로 입문했다. 그녀는 "아이템을 구매하기 위해 돈도 쓰고 있다. 이제 진 힐라까지 성공했다. 물론 혼자서 격파하진 않았다. 보스는 너무 어렵다. 그래도 캐릭터가 귀여워서 재밌게 즐기는 중이다. (앞에 핑크빈을 가리키며) 마스코트 캐릭터도 정말 귀엽다"고 말했다.
 시간이 흐를수록 더 많은 인파가 모여들었다. 더운 날씨에도 인내의 숲을 도전하고 자신의 캐릭터를 인증하는 방문객들의 모습을 보며 메이플스토리가 게임을 초월해 하나의 IP로서 현실 속에서도 확실히 스며들었다고 느껴졌다. 메이플스토리 유저로서 자랑스러웠달까.
 넥슨 관계자는 "첫 행사부터 현장을 찾아 '메이플스토리'의 22주년을 함께 한 많은 용사들에게 무척 감사하다. 앞으로 전국 각지의 대학 캠퍼스와 번화가에서 진행될 남은 일정에도 큰 기대를 부탁한다"고 전했다.
 한편, 넥슨은 게임 속에도 메이플 대학교 콘셉트의 다채로운 이벤트를 시작했다. 핑크빈의 전국 캠퍼스 투어 이벤트가 진행되는 일정에 맞춰 게임 접속 시 대학 친구 핑크빈 이펙트 교환권, 메이플 대학교 학생증 의자, 분홍까망 대학 점퍼 교환권 등 메이플 대학교 콘셉트의 각종 치장 아이템을 제공한다.
