 "싸우는 여성은 아름답다"라는 철학 아래 언제나 기대 이상의 여성 캐릭터와 기대 이상의 수많은 DLC로 이용자들을 놀라게 했던 게임. '데드 오브 얼라이브'(이하 DOA) 시리즈의 신작 '비너스 베케이션 프리즘 - DOA 익스트림'(이하 '비너스 베케이션 프리즘')이 지난 3월 27일 정식 발매됐다.
 이번에 출시된 '비너스 베케이션 프리즘'은 2017년에 발매된 ‘DOA 익스트림 비너스 베케이션’의 스핀오프 작으로, DOA 시리즈 역사상 최초의 연애 시뮬레이션으로 기대를 모았던 작품이었다.

 더욱이 대전격투 게임인 본가 시리즈는 이제 기약도 없이 표류하고 있지만, 외전이 유독 잘나가는 DOA의 상황을 대변하듯 이 게임은 철저히 ‘DOA 익스트림 비치발리볼’ 시리즈의 콘텐츠를 계승하고 있으며, 연애 시뮬레이션 특유의 두근거리는 이벤트가 더해져 상당히 독특한 재미를 제공한다.

 이를 확인할 수 있는 것이 바로 캐릭터다. 이번 작품에는 오너(이용자)를 보좌하는 ‘아르바이트생’ (미사키), 비밀을 간직한 ‘스쿨걸’(호노카), 어른스러움을 뽐내는 ‘미녀’ (타마키), 성에서 도망친 ‘프린세스’ (피오나), 여자 친구와 같은 ‘미소녀’ (나나미), 냉혹한 ‘지도역’ (엘리제) 등 총 6명의 ‘비너스’(히로인)가 등장한다.

 DOA의 개국공신이라 할 수 있는 카스미, 아야네, 레이팡과 같은 전통의 캐릭터들은 제외되어 있으나, 게임 속 캐릭터들의 매력이 상당하고, 서로 다른 성격과 연애관을 지니고 있어 이들과 함께하는 이벤트와 미션도 상당히 흥미롭게 진행된다.
 이 게임은 남국의 섬에서 리조트를 운영하는 ‘오너’(이용자)가 비너스와 함께 섬을 다시 부흥시킨다는 목적으로 진행된다. 이용자는 챕터를 거치며 선택에 따라 발생하는 이벤트를 통해 캐릭터와 교감하여 호감도를 높이고, 캐릭터별로 서포터를 늘릴 수 있다.

 이 서포터는 상당히 중요한데, 서포터가 늘어날수록 오너 레벨이 올라 추가 스토리 및 수영복이 해금되는 등 더욱 다양한 콘텐츠를 만나볼 수 있기 때문이다.

 이 서포터 증가의 핵심은 다름 아닌 사진 찍기다. 매 챕터마다 특정 사물 혹은 동작을 찍는 미션이 주어지며, 이 미션에 따라 사진을 찍으면 사진마다 점수가 부여되고, 높은 점수를 지닌 사진을 제출하면 더 많은 서포터를 모을 수 있다.
 사진 찍기는 그야말로 타이밍의 연속이다. 컷신 이외에 모든 장면에서 캐릭터를 촬영할 수 있고, 음영 조절, 조리개 조절, 위치 조정 등 다양한 카메라 기능으로 캐릭터를 더욱 아름답게 찍을 수 있는 것은 물론, 독특한 배경을 더해 재미있는 사진을 촬영할 수 있다. 
 물론, 챕터당 사진은 50장으로 한정되어 있고, 이용자의 선택에 따라 사진 미션을 수행할 수 없는 경우도 생기며, 사진찍기에 너무 몰입하다 보면 다소 현타가 올 수 있어 간단 촬영으로 빠르게 게임을 진행하는 것도 좋은 방법이다.

 연애 시뮬레이션 콘텐츠는 너무 자극적이지도 않은 적당한 수준이었다. 이 게임은 이용자의 대사 선택에 따라 호감도가 높아지거나 낮아지며, 문자를 통해 새로운 약속을 잡거나 신규 정보를 확인할 수 있다.
 여기에 호감도가 너무 낮으면 답변을 못 하거나 간혹 캐릭터가 만남을 거부하는 일이 생기고, 일정 호감도 이상이 될 경우에는 특별 이벤트가 발생하는 데다 두 캐릭터 중 하나를 양자택일해야 하는 돌발 이벤트도 등장하는 것도 상당히 흥미로운 부분이었다.

 다만 기존 ‘DOA 익스트림 비치발리볼 시리즈’와 비교해 수영복이 생각보다 얌전(?)했고, 캐릭터와의 이벤트도 “그래서 이걸로 끝?”이라는 생각이 들 만큼 별다른 자극적인 요소가 없어 좀 더 “과감한 이벤트와 수영복이 등장했다면 어땠을까?”라는 것이 필자의 개인적인 생각이다.
 다 회차 플레이를 강요하는 게임 시스템도 다소 호불호가 갈릴 것으로 보인다. '비너스 베케이션 프리즘'은 1회차 플레이에서는 최대 호감도를 달성하지 못하거나, 모든 수영복을 해금하지 못할 정도로 게임이 빡빡하게 구현되어 있다.

 이에 이용자는 자연스럽게 다회차 플레이를 진행할 수밖에 없다. 물론, 캐릭터별 호감도나 서포터 수가 연계되어 2회차부터는 난도가 급격하게 내려가지만, 모든 캐릭터의 엔딩을 보려면 최소 6번 이상 플레이를 해야 해서 2회차부터 게임이 급속도로 지루해지는 느낌을 받았다.

 이처럼 '비너스 베케이션 프리즘'은 DOA 특유의 수려한 캐릭터와 잔잔한 연애 시뮬레이션의 재미를 느낄 수 있지만, 다소 아쉬운 볼륨과 다 회차를 강요하는 콘텐츠. 그리고 19세 게임임에도 별다른 자극적인 요소가 없는 등 장단점이 동시에 존재하는 게임이었다.

 만약 새로운 형태의 연애 시뮬레이션을 찾거나, DOA 특유의 수려한 캐릭터 디자인을 선호하는 이들. 혹은 게임 속 모든 이벤트를 찾아내는 것에 흥미를 느끼는 이용자라면 '비너스 베케이션 프리즘'은 한 번쯤 즐겨볼 만한 작품이라는 것이 개인적인 평가다.
